Their data was conclusive. Participants whose diets were at least 25% sugar were more than twice as likely to die from heart disease. As an added control, researchers tracked every participant’s complete dietary habits. This ensured that lost nutrition from empty calories wasn’t creating a false correlation in their data. They were able to confirm a key idea. Participants who had an otherwise healthy, nutrient-filled diet were still more than twice as likely to die from heart disease if more than 25% of their calories were from added sugar.
